where good deeds are rewarded with apples & the bad with lemons

The 54th Hijos de Davao Part 2

Once a year, on the evening of June 29, the descendants of the original settlers in Davao as well as the new generation of immigrants gather to honor the Patron Saint San Pedro on its feast day and celebrate decades of camaraderie. It’s a chance to catch up and get to know the rest of the family members.

Since Hijos de Davao grand ball is a formal affair, it’s also a night for the citizens to glam up. The annual affair has always been an exciting party.

But behind the glitter and glamour, the Hijos de Davao Foundation has an important role to fulfill. As a civic organization, it is tasked to look after the welfare of Davao and its citizen. Its focus is to preserve and promote cultural heritage of the Dabawenyos while building a stronger community through its social and civic projects that uplifts the living standards and education of the people who need it most.

Hijos de Davao President Vince Garcia has been spearheading several projects during his post for the past three years. One of the projects he initiated, and ably supported by the Hijos Board, is the gathering of old Davao images between 1888 to the mid 1950s.

“This is in line with the Hijos de Davao’s mission of preserving Davao’s heritage and culture. Three hundred images from the roughly 3,000 photos gathered were enlarged and then framed. The same 300 framed images are set to be exhibited in Davao’s malls soon for the benefit of local Davao citizens,” said Vince Garcia.

Another project that is being planned by the Officers of the Hijos de Davao is the Weaving Project that will be tied up with the Department of Education.

Ex-oficio Jackie Garcia-Dizon shares, “Of the 12 indigenous tribes of Davao City, a common problem they are facing is that there are only a few members left who are knowledgeable in weaving their fabrics. It is the intention of the planned project to entice more members of their tribe to learn how to weave by educating and training them in the production of their fabrics to which their clothes are made from.”

The success of these Hijos de Davao projects is something to look forward to.

Congratulations to another successful affair and good luck on the coming projects of Hijos de Davao!
