where good deeds are rewarded with apples & the bad with lemons

Union Market to open a new sweet spot in the city

Sugar levels will be on a high when the new food stop in the city starts serving its saccharine treats in the northern part of the city.

Union Market, soon to open in Azuela Cove, is a pasteleria, taperia and brasserie. It will whip up savory dishes to satisfy the urge for good food. But it’s the meal ender—the French desserts—that may just keep you coming back for more.

To prove their point, Union Market and its supplier, La Rose Noire, a French-owned company, hosted a trade show of what to expect from the restaurant and showroom. An assortment of breads was presented for the brasserie’s savory line and the dessert line that made everyone present excited (to think they haven’t had their fill of sugar yet).

But it wasn’t all previews, it was a food tasting event as well. I was one of the lucky sweet-toothed guests who got first dibs on the offerings.

What to expect? Let’s start with the one of the favorite French desserts—the macarons. These round merengue sandwiches with its generous quantity of pate de fruit filling comes two variants and sizes.

The large-sized macarons, which is good for two-bites (4cm size), comes in single or double flavors. Single-flavored macarons come in Vanilla, Chocolate, Earl Gray, Coffee, Lemon, Passion Fruit, Raspberry, and Salted Caramel.

The double-flavored macarons are distinguished from the other variant by the dot on the sandwich face. It’s a mix of the flavored sandwich faces and fillings, and prepared in nine exciting mix of flavors: green apple and cinnamon, vanilla and cherry, orange and chocolate, tiramisu and coffee, mango and coconut, pistachio and chocolate, chocolate and banana, lemon and raspberry, and caramel and hazelnut.

A tray of goodness

With these much flavors, of course, you’d like (or must) to try everything. Here’s the good news—the single and double-flavored macarons also come in mini versions, which are good for a single-bite (2.8cm).  The mini-me versions will justify why all flavors are on your plate—first, because you have to sample all (how else should one discover a favorite), and second, simply because all nine flavors fit on your small plate.

The “Eclairons” are the macarons’ cousins. It’s everything macaron only it’s shaped like eclairs. These only come in double flavors.

The cheesecakes are as accommodating as the macarons in terms of size and are aprtle called “Petit Cheesecakes”. This allows us, sweet-toothed creatures, to enjoy more than one flavor from the selections.

If you love cream puffs you’ll love this re-created a classical French dessert of “le choux a la crème”—Les ChouChous. La Rose Noire calls it “a trendy pastry”. This bite-sized puff pastry has a craquelin topping and crunchy chocolate at the bottom, and to make it more exciting, it has a double filling of nutty caramel and vanilla, pistachio and chocolate, double chocolate, black currant and vanilla, double raspberry and mango and passion fruit. Now we can have our fill of cream puffs in a single go!

Speaking of boulangerie, Union Market will be serving and selling specialty breads as well. Now we can go bread shopping like the French do and serve it in our homes. French bread, monsieur? Croissant, madam?
